Sorry guys this is not the best pic but hey I am a shopper not a photographer lol. I hope you all enjoy the following post from Jennifer Davenport of JD Designs. Jennifer is an award winning interior decorator who believes interior design does not have to be intimidating. "I believe in making the most of any decorating budget" As you will see from Jennifer's post below you really can have the home of your dreams no matter how big or small a budget you are working with.
One of the best ways I have saved money in my home is with used furniture. I'm not speaking about upholstery furniture necessarily, but occasional tables, coffee tables, etc. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Nashville Flea Market, it is a secret treasure trove of furniture goodies. Now, you have to look at many pieces as a diamond in the rough. And you have to be willing to use a little elbow grease, perhaps mess your nails up a bit. But, it is so worth it! I love telling people how much I paid for things and just watching their faces fall. It is fabulous.
When you have younger children, buying used pieces with a couple of scratches is no big deal. That way you don't get upset if they add more scratches. There are a few tricks, like using antique gel to go over the scratches, and finishing with a matte varnish.
Okay, one of my tips for having a low-maintenance home is when it comes to wood furniture that you have refinished yourself by using tung oil! Yes, I use it on all my furniture that I have refinished. Tung oil is great because you can put glasses on a table and it will not leave a ring. And that is another look I get from guest who come over when I say, "No, don't worry you don't need a coaster!" You will have to reapply tung oil about once a year, but follow the instructions on the can, it's easy! Below are three pieces of my favorite finds, what they cost, and how I got them to look FAB!
This round table with a glass top was originally $250. I paid $20.00 at a garage sale. The glass top was in perfect condition, the wood a little scratched, but I rubbed antique gel over the rough spots, let it dry and then added a coat of matte finish varnish. Fabulous!!!!
This round table was a flea market find. I gave it a good sanding, then added wood stain, and matte varnish. $40
And hopefully, this one will make everyone jealous! Ha This coffee table was a garage sale find. The top was in awful condition, I primed it, then painted it off-white, and added antiquing gel. And after it was completely dry, matte varnish. Total cost--$5.00. Yep, too awesome!
